Tigran Petrosian was a World Chess Champion and a true legend of the game. He was nicknamed "Iron Tigran" because of his incredible defensive skills that made him a formidable opponent who was virtually impossible to defeat. Petrosian was the master of restraint, prophylaxis and prevention. He could spot and defuse threats well before they were created, suck the life out an opponent's position and then seize a vice-like grip on the game. In this book, International Master Thomas Engqvist selects and examines his favourite Petrosian games, and shows us how we can all learn and improve our chess by studying Petrosian's masterpieces.

Move by Move provides an ideal platform to study chess. By continually challenging the reader to answer probing questions throughout the book, the Move by Move format greatly encourages the learning and practising of vital skills just as much as the traditional assimilation of knowledge. Carefully selected questions and answers are designed to keep you actively involved and allow you to monitor your progress as you learn. This is an excellent way to improve your chess skills and knowledge.

* Learn from the games of a World Champion
* Important ideas absorbed by continued practice
* Utilizes an ideal approach to chess study

Petrosian Move by Move edition by Thomas Engqvist Humor Entertainment eBooks

The author did a great work to find out the secrets of the enigmatic chess style of Tigran V. Petrosian, who was World champion for six years. The analyses and explanations given by Thomas Engquist are really illuminating. Petrosian is one of my chess heroes, I have played through many of his games already published in collections of his games (especially in books of Vik Vasiliev and P. H. Clarke), and have enjoyed them, but I cannot say that I grasped everything. This book is a great help, now I can better understand the subtleties of his peculiar style, his positional ideas and prophilactic thinking, I can recommend this book for anybody who is interested in improving his positional understanding of chess and enjoy the often sturtling solutions of Petrosian to difficult positions.

Petrosian Move by Move edition by Thomas Engqvist Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews

Great read
I was looking forward to this new book on Petrosian's games as I'm a fan of the player -- his subtle and oblique style appeals to me. Unfortunately the annotator -- Swedish IM Engqvist -- isn't up to the task. His comments are fluff, designed to fill paper but leave the reader none the wiser. A typical example (p.227) is "Observe how Petrosian postpones castling to keep his options open and maintain maximum flexibility for his king." Gee whiz, who'd ever have thunk it, eh? In some cases even the wording is wrong -- e.g., on p.292 "Even with the king on f8, Black is lost because of the passive positions of his major pieces which are defend their king." Everyman should at least have hired an editor to go through the manuscript. What's expected of an annotator in today's exacting era is insight -- and that's what Engqvist seemingly doesn't have. Maybe he's just not a strong enough player for the job of elucidating Petrosian's games and playing style. A pity. At least Lakdawala writes engagingly.
love it
Useful !!!
I purchased this in order to learn more about how to defend in chess; to preempt dangers coming from opponents, before they become obvious. There were several games that I felt could have been included here in addition. Nonetheless, a great read!
